boston bazaar bizarre: coming up real quick-like

Boston Bazaar Bizarre
Sunday December 7, 2008
12 pm-7pm
@ The Castle at Park Plaza
101 Arlington Street
Boston, MA 02116
$1 Admission

The Boston branch of this nationally renowned craft fair will take place on December 7th 2008 from Noon to 7 pm at the Park Plaza Castle in Boston. With the DIY/handmade phenomenon at its peak, check out the event that started it all. Shoppers can expect to find the crème de la crème of indie goods: handbags, pottery, letterpress stationary, silk-screened t-shirts, baby clothes, body products and more!

Bazaar Bizarre began in 2001 in the Boston-area as a hodge-podge of friends and acquaintances cobbling together their handcrafted DIY wares to sell and staging an offbeat entertainment extravaganza. In 2004 the Bazaar Bizarre spread to Los Angeles, Cleveland and in 2006 Make took the group under their wing to include the Bazaar Bizarre as part of the Maker Faire in the San Mateo and Austin. Bazaar Bizarre Boston will offer attendees an opportunity to purchase handmade goods, groove to djs, and enjoy local food.

Shop Sustainably, Shop Indie
Bazaar Bizarre Boston (BBB) will feature 140+ indie crafters and designers from across the country. The event will also serve as a networking opportunity for indie designers and businesses from New England and the beyond. Past Bazaar Bizarre vendors have included My Paper Crane, Craftster, My Favorite Mirror, Art School Dropout and Skunkadelia. View the entire vendor list at http://bazaarbizarre.org/boston_stuff/vendorlist.html

Indie Music, Handmade Nation and Food!
Holiday grooving DJs will be providing entertainment throughout the day, and as always you can catch Holiday Thereminist Extraordinaire, Jonnie Spaceman. Words cannot describe the love and goodwill of the people for Jonnie Spaceman, a stalwart feature of the Boston Bazaar Bizarre. With his inimitable theremin stylings, Mr. Spaceman has redefined for the ages both "indie rock" and "Christmas Carol." .

Handmade Nation documents a movement of artists, crafters and designers that recognize a marriage between historical techniques, punk and DIY ethos while being influenced by traditional handiwork, modern aesthetics, politics, feminism, and art. Fueled by the common thread of creating, Handmade Nation explores a burgeoning art community that is based on creativity, determination and networking. Check out Handmade Nation's table for a screening of a 20 clip from the movie.

At least 3 food vendors will be providing all sorts of snacks and food to help fuel our shoppers. Petsi Pies, Snacks, Crackers and Pop, and Mr. Puppovich's Odd Beverages & Uncommon Delights will be providing fuel throughout the day to help you keep on track with shopping!

If You Support Bazaar Bizarre Boston, You Support…
Community * Sustainability * Small Business * Artists and Craftsmen

Brought to you by the 2008 Boston Bazaar Bizarre organizers: Alison Gordon (www.homeofthesampler.com), Jen Ferreira (www.saint9.com), Marissa Falco (www.marissaland.com), Megan Kelliher, Sarah Coyne (www.eggagogo.com), and Stacie Slotnick (www.thecritique.org).

happenings, dudes

Baixa and Guatemala City played WMBR's Pipeline! the other night. You can download the podcast here. The recording was a lot of fun and DJ Jeff Breeze was a lot of fun to talk to afterwards [the interview isn't part of the podcast, unfortunately, but it's still a great listen]!

Baixa will be spinning records at Mass Market as DJ Braindance, so look for that Sunday, December 14th!

thumbs & things

Due to an unfortunate digital accident, Baixa + 1 had to back out of the Whitehaus Halloween show this weekend. While at school on Friday, I accidentally cut out a big old piece of thumb and was rendered fairly useless.

No stitches, but they had to cauterize the wound to stop the bleeding [which hurts just about as bad as you're imagining] and give me a tetanus shot. Hurrah! We DID still get costumed to go out and were marveled at by adults and children alike.

THE GOOD NEWS IS that Baixa's playing another show a week from today at the Milky Way and will, provided my hand is on the mend, include me [and probably masks]. 9 pm, FREE!

In other news, Baixa has slated the Dirty Flow from the Hyper-Extended Hustle Muscle album release date for January 26th, 2009. Get psyched!

the most news

Hey all. It has been about a hundred years since I posted anything new, but that is not for lack of events. Quite the opposite, actually, as things are bizzee bizzee.

First up - I applied to and was accepted by the North Bennet Street School Bookbinding program in the spring and have been in class since the beginning of September. The experience so far has been amazing and I feel super lucky. Our program has a couple of events coming up that I think are worth mentioning:

- Providence Fine Furnishings Show, the last day of which is today. I was there yesterday and can tell you that the work there is truly incredible. In the past, the Cabinet and Furniture Making program was the only one that participated in this show, but they've since opened it up and have included the Bookbinding and Jewelry Making & Repair programs.
- North Bennet Street School Open House - this is what swayed me to apply to the school and is an excellent opportunity to see the above-mentioned programs as well as the Piano Technology, Locksmithing, Violin Making & Repair, Carpentry and Preservation Carpentry programs [and to buy student work in the gallery!]. November 7th - 10 am to 2 pm and Saturday, November 8th - 10 am to 3 pm at 39 North Bennet Street in Boston's North End.
- The Boston International Antiquarian Bookfair, one of the oldest and most respected antiquarian book shows in the country. Over 120 rare book dealers from the United States, England, Germany and The Netherlands are expected to exhibit and sell rare, collectible and antiquarian books, modern first editions, manuscripts, autographs, maps, atlases, and a plethora of other literary ephemera. Fine and decorative prints will also be featured. November 14th - 16th at Hynes Convention Center, Friday 5 pm to 9 pm, Saturday 12 pm to 7 pm, Sunday 12 to 5 pm.

Beyond that, I'll be at Bazaar Bizarre, which is coming up quick and is being held in a new location this time around - The Castle at Park Plaza! See the Baz Biz Blog for news & updates. This year's event is being held Sunday, December 7th from 12 pm - 7 pm. Check out the vendor list if you've got a minute!

Also also ALSO, Mass Market will be following close behind! #3 will be taking place Sunday, December 14th and we're looking for vendors NOW! Send applications with contact information, a website address, three photos and a description of work and/or any questions to mass.craft.market@gmail.com by November 15th!

Baixa has two shows coming up this week:

- An Epic Whitehaus Halloween Festival featuring White Hinterland, Turtle Ambulance, Prince Rama of Ayodhya, Truman Peyote, Guatemala City, Peace,Loving, Many Mansions, Fractilian, The Needy Visions, Eric Hnatow, Diamond Mouse, Cave Bears, Mind Control, Baixa, and Manners. Friday, October 31st @ 10 Seaverns Street, JP. All ages, free, 7 pm.
- DMBQ, Yip-Yip, Ho-Ag and Baixa @ MassArt Wednesday, October 29th. All Ages, $11, 7 pm. This is gonna be HY-UGE.

In addition to all the events we've [respectively] got going on, Floating Garbage Continent is also working on sick t-shirts and a Baixa demo. Keep both eyes out!

oh hello

So. I created this blog a couple of months back, in the hopes that its existence would push me to Make Shit All The Time since conceivably, I'd be looking to post about it. In truth, my incessant laziness and newfound life busy-ness caused me to forget and delay and etc etc. Excuses.

Here we are, then. This should serve as a place to read about events, collabs, look at me! binding moments, and general updates. Read if you please, friends. Thx 2 U.
